Bush Hill Park Bowls, Tennis & Social Club

Bush Hill Park Bowls, Tennis & Social Club.

If it’s sports you are after, and you’re in the North London area, then Bush Hill Park Club is the place bushhillclubto head for as it offers bowls, tennis, table tennis and snooker.

The club dates back to 1912 so has a long history.  It’s limited by guarantee and run by a board of directors, headed by the chairman.

Back in clubland’s heyday in the 70’s and 80’s, there was plenty going on entertainment wise, with an elected entertainment director.  Ian Rudston held that post for 14 years until the decline in club entertainment set in.  There was a thriving social section where various functions were put on for the members and cabarets were well loved by many members including the ents director, Ian.

He told club historians:
‘As a drummer at the time I was fortunate to have contact with a lot of artists and agents at a time when variety acts in clubland were plentiful and indeed were able to sign “named” acts of the day at affordable prices.

It is sad to see that aspect of club life diminishing, but I recall at that time we were entering a recession and a lot of club committees were starting to say “'Oh, we can’t afford this or that, there’s a recession”' and the entertainment budget would be cut.

We attempted to fight that by ignoring that 'dirty' word recession, but eventually to no avail.  A further factor in the demise of cabaret shows etc., in clubs is that at the time artists were putting their prices up to a point where small clubs just could not afford them.’

But being a sports club, there were other things for the members to do and to keep the club alive.  But Ian hopes that one day, variety shows and cabaret might make a come back and the entertainment side of things will expand again.

Some of the 'named' artists I booked included Dave Evans (Father of the now famous Lee Evans), Ted Rogers, Jim Bowen and Paul Melba.

We have also had Emile Ford from the 60's play here and also one Xmas eve Denny Laine (of Paul McCartney and Wings fame) did an acoustic set.
